Alien, Robot, Monster Wall Mural
For Variant- TEAM: Variant

When the design agency I work for was planning the renovation of our new garage space, I was presented with a question: “If you were going to put a wall mural in here, where would you put it?” I couldn’t resist the idea of using the mezzanine as a divider for an interchangeable alien, robot, monster mural. I started with a quick sketch mockup of my idea to demonstrate how it would work.
Concept & Exploratory Sketches
The mural would consist of 5 scenes, each featuring a creature of some kind. Below the mezzanine, the scenes would be static, but up top, the center scene would house a TV or storage cabinet fitted with two overlapping doors. Each door, when opened, would cover the scene to the left or right and reveal a different creature in that scene. A series of loose sketches helped me firm up some general details about the creatures and their environments.
Color & Layout
Once I had a general sense of who, what and where, it was time to focus on composition and color. With 5 distinct scenes next to each other, it was important that color be the thread that pulled everything together into one cohesive piece. Each scene shared the same palette with color strategically placed so that it would move fluidly across the wall.
Mock It Up!
Since this piece would require some fairly intricate construction work and precise measurements for printing and installation, I created a physical 1:12 scale model of the wall to give printers and installers a clear idea of what they were building.
Welcome to Variant
