Parking Lot Navigation
For Skagit Regional Health- TEAM: Variant
- ROLE: Lead Designer
- YEAR: 2019
Skagit Regional Health is a healthcare leader in northwest Washington state. With 6 facilities supported by 12 parking lots on their Mount Vernon Campus, visitors often reported difficulty finding the parking lot most appropriate for their given destination. Additionally, it was challenging for staff to communicate directions to visitors since lots were not named or marked effectively. I was lead designer on a team tasked with helping develop a cohesive naming and signage system for parking lots across the campus to improve visitor navigation and staff communication.
Color & Shapes
To help visitors quickly find the parking lot they need, we assigned each facility on campus a distinct color. Parking lots that serve a facility use its color in signage and on maps. To further distinguish individual lots, we created a set of stylized, recognizable icons based on regional animals, plants and geography. Each lot is named for one of these icons allowing visitors to easily identify and remember parking lots without language or literacy barriers.
Clear to see, easy to explain
With highly visible signage using distinct colors, simple, easy-to-remember parking lot icons and strategically placed campus directories, visitor self-navigation is greatly simplified and staff now has language to communicate to visitors needing help.
