Mission, Vision & Values
For Spark Therapeutics- TEAM: Toolhouse

Spark Therapeutics specializes in one-time therapies designed to deliver potentially life-altering transformation for people and families affected by genetic disease. I was lead designer on a team tasked with helping develop their mission, vision and values into a robust campaign that would communicate the innovative spirit of the company with a focus on the patients that inspire it. I was responsible for all visuals and animation for the project, which culminated with an animated Keynote presentation at a company shareholder meeting.
The Design Concept
The team at Spark provided us with an internally-derived Mission, Vision and Values (MVV) framework and employee surveys offering a clear picture of how the company viewed itself and its purpose. We also received a collection of photos and a project brief emphasizing that patients were the center of everything at Spark and its employees were an essential part of its success. Our team refined and expanded the framework into a fully-developed expression of Spark’s driving principles and created a design concept that embedded patients within the DNA of Spark by using a series of constellations hidden in an abstract genetic-style pattern to reveal actual patients. We then attached these constellations to Spark’s mission, vision and each of its value statements. To incorporate employees into the presentation we paired each of the values with a captioned employee photo and recorded employee voices reading the MVV statements for the presentation.
Companion Pieces
Supporting graphics were used on t-shirts, notebooks and other swag that was given out at the event. Additionally, we created large-format wall graphics that were installed in Spark’s offices to keep their newly crafted philosophy top of mind for current and future employees.
A foundation to build on
The success of the campaign led to the expansion of the project into an ongoing employee onboarding & retention system that included a cultural identity brochure, a microsite for the company’s intranet and an employee recognition program.
