Data-driven Embeddable Widgets
For Intuit- TEAM: Toolhouse
- ROLE: Lead Designer
- YEAR: 2013
Intuit QuickBooks Online is industry-leading subscription-based financial software helping millions of businesses streamline their finances each year. In 2013, the team at QuickBooks Online had an offering called Trends that used figures compiled from anonymized data submitted by 1.3 million QuickBooks Online users to reveal trends in business finances across various industries nationally. As part of this initiative, I was lead designer on a team that created an embeddable widget builder that would allow users to display these trends on their site or in a blog post.
Quick and Easy
We devised a simple 3-step process:
- Configure an industry
- Explore the results
- Share it on your website
Leveraging the JavaScript library Charts.js for beautiful animated charts, we designed a page with a simple industry configuration UI that displayed several metrics offering current insights into industry trends across the country.
Copy and Paste
To easily share these trends with readers, embed code was provided for 2 embeddable widgets designed at different aspect ratios so they could be placed in different locations on a website.
Plug and Play on Delivery
In addition to design, we developed and delivered the full front end of the experience, using Charts.js to render animated charts populated with endpoint calls and dummy data provided by the client, so integration for the development team at QuickBooks Online was as simple as swapping out the dummy data for live data.
